ANTS

New Mexico is home to various ant species, each with its unique characteristics. One common ant species found in this region is the desert harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex spp.). These ants are known for their large size and reddish-brown coloration. They build large, distinctive mound-shaped nests in sandy soils and are highly territorial, fiercely defending their nests from intruders. Another prevalent ant species in New Mexico is the carpenter ant (Camponotus spp.). These ants are larger in size and usually black or dark brown. They are known to excavate galleries in wood, including homes and trees, which can cause significant damage. Lastly, the odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) is also common in New Mexico. These small, dark brown ants emit a strong, unpleasant odor when crushed. They often invade homes in search of food and are known to be persistent. Overall, New Mexico provides a diverse habitat for various ant species, each playing their distinct roles in the ecosystem.
